Ameyoko - visitor guide

アメ横(アメヤ横丁)

Ameyoko follows the railway between Ueno and Okachimachi through a dense mix of food stalls, clothing shops and specialist retailers. The market's postwar origins help explain its compact, improvised feel beneath and beside the tracks. Browse the changing mix of goods and side passages, leaving time to compare individual shops rather than expecting a single market hall.

Why go

Its compressed lanes and varied merchandise offer a street-market experience within Ueno's wider shopping district.

Field Notes

The merchants’ association preserves two explanations for Ameyoko’s name: Ameya Yokocho, referring to its concentration of sweet sellers, and America Yokocho, referring to imported American goods. Both point to the products through which the district became known in the postwar period. The association also describes returned servicemen organising a trading community amid shortages, giving the market a history of self-organisation as well as improvised commerce. That background makes its varied merchandise easier to understand. It developed through specialists selling different things, rather than through a single consistent retail theme. Ask about products that interest you and compare neighbouring shops; the association itself emphasises traders’ knowledge and cautions against pushing bargaining too far.
