Ueno Zoo - visitor guide

恩賜上野動物園

Ueno Zoo divides its grounds into East and West gardens within Ueno Park. That layout makes it worth choosing the sections you most want to explore before adding other park stops. The surrounding museum district lets a Tokyo day combine animal exhibits with a separate cultural visit, without treating the zoo as a quick detour.

Why go

The park setting suits travelers combining a zoo visit with Ueno's museums and outdoor spaces.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 2–4 hours. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: At opening, especially on warm or busy days.

Access reference: JR Ueno Station Park Exit / Keisei Ueno Station / Nezu Station. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

Current standard hours are 09:30–17:00, with admission ending one hour before closing. The zoo is usually closed Mondays or the following day when Monday is a holiday, plus December 29–January 1. Xiao Xiao and Lei Lei left Ueno Zoo for China on January 27, 2026, so visitors should not expect giant pandas.

Dated calendar update: October 9–12, 2026 open 09:30–20:00, last entry 19:00. Some animal exhibits close earlier. The published calendar opens selected ordinary Mondays, including October 19, November 2, November 16 and December 21. In the October 5–December 27 window, closed dates are October 5, 13 and 26; November 9, 24 and 30; and December 7 and 14. Use the dated calendar rather than assuming every Monday is closed.
