LEGAL
Terms of Use
Last updated September 18, 2026.
Agreement to these terms
These Terms of Use govern your use of Unmapped Japan. By using the service, creating an account, saving preferences, or using an Anonymous Traveler profile, you agree to these Terms and the posted Privacy Policy. If you do not agree, do not use the affected features. If you use the service on behalf of another person or organization, you are responsible for having authority to do so.
The service
Unmapped Japan is a Japan discovery and travel-planning service focused on destinations, local culture, history, practical travel context, subculture, scenic stops, and related planning tools. Features, availability, account options, and Membership offerings may change over time. We may add, modify, restrict, suspend, or discontinue features when reasonably necessary for maintenance, security, legal compliance, abuse prevention, or product changes.
Anonymous Traveler profiles
Eligible signed-out visitors may save temporary place or event preferences through an Anonymous Traveler profile. These profiles are temporary rather than permanent accounts. They expire 15 days after creation even if you continue using the site, and expired information may not be recoverable. Save your Traveler Code and PIN if you want to restore the profile on another browser or device. Anyone who obtains both may be able to restore the temporary profile, so you are responsible for keeping them private.
Settings may list browsers connected to a Code/PIN and show a browser/device label, approximate city and region, session start and last-active times, and expiration information. Those labels are informational and may be inaccurate. You can expire other browser sessions or delete the temporary profile. The service may pause creation of new anonymous profiles, limit restore attempts, or apply other safeguards when needed to prevent automated abuse or protect availability. Converting to an eligible registered account may merge supported temporary preferences into that account.
Accounts and security
You are responsible for activity under your account and for keeping credentials secure. You must not attempt to access another user’s private data, use another person’s Anonymous Traveler Code/PIN without authorization, bypass Membership or access controls, interfere with security features, evade rate limits, or use the service for unlawful or harmful activity.
The service may display account-security notices, including a warning when a security provider indicates that credentials used to sign in may have appeared in known breach data. A password change may rotate the current session and sign out other browsers; a successful forgot-password reset may invalidate all prior sessions. You agree that the service may take reasonable steps to protect an account or the platform, including revoking sessions, requiring fresh authentication, rate-limiting recovery attempts, or temporarily restricting suspicious activity.
Travel information
Opening hours, prices, transportation, event schedules, access restrictions, closures, reservation rules, and other travel details can change without notice. Unmapped Japan records verification dates and sources where practical, but you are responsible for checking important current information with the official operator before travel, entry, reservation, or purchase.
History, tradition, and reported experiences
The Places catalog may distinguish documented history, transmitted tradition, reported experiences, and modern cultural interpretation. Inclusion in the catalog does not establish a disputed or supernatural claim as fact. Visitors must respect private property, sacred places, cemeteries, memorials, posted restrictions, photography rules, safety guidance, and local law.
Journey planning and saved information
Saved places, event states, itineraries, map tools, route suggestions, reminders, estimated times, prices, and other planning features are convenience tools, not guarantees. Conditions can change after information is saved. You remain responsible for confirming transportation, reservations, accessibility, opening status, travel time, legal access, and safety before relying on a plan.
Membership and payments
When paid Membership is available, the current price, duration, renewal terms if any, and included features are shown before purchase. Payments are handled by the configured payment provider. Historical payment records may be preserved separately from administrative Membership actions for accounting, support, fraud prevention, and audit purposes. Membership access may be suspended or revoked for nonpayment, abuse, fraud, or material violation of these Terms, subject to applicable law. Deleting an account ends access associated with that account and does not automatically cancel, reverse, or refund a Membership payment, except where a refund is required by applicable law.
User content and review moderation
If reviews, notes, profile content, social features, or other user submissions are enabled, you retain ownership of your original content while granting the service a non-exclusive license to host, store, reproduce, display, format, moderate, redact, and otherwise process that content as needed to operate the service, protect users, enforce these Terms, and comply with law. Do not submit unlawful, infringing, abusive, deceptive, malicious, privacy-invasive, or unauthorized personal information.
Review submissions may be automatically screened. Email addresses and phone numbers may be removed before storage; restricted language may be masked; and threatening, abusive, or otherwise prohibited submissions may be rejected or removed. These controls are protective measures and are not a promise that every inappropriate submission will be detected.
If you later delete your account, reviews may remain only after the account relationship is severed and the author is displayed as [deleted user]. Other private account data is not transferred to a generic user account merely to preserve review ownership.
Account deletion
Signed-in users may permanently delete their account from Settings by entering the required confirmation text. Account deletion is irreversible and permanently removes ordinary account/profile information and user-owned saved data. Favorites and Favorite / Want to Visit / Visited Place and Event selections may continue only as unlinked aggregate counts used for site statistics or popularity measurements; retained aggregate counts do not preserve private notes, individual visit dates, or a deleted-user profile. Certain de-linked reviews and limited records may remain where necessary for accounting, security, fraud prevention, dispute resolution, legal compliance, audit obligations, or honoring communication preferences. Account deletion does not delete or alter another user’s account, reviews, saved data, transactions, or other records.
Acceptable use
You may not scrape or systematically extract protected or Member-only content; probe or circumvent authentication, authorization, rate limits, or technical restrictions; introduce malicious code; disrupt normal operation; impersonate another person; automate account or anonymous-profile creation in a manner that burdens the service; or use the service to violate another person’s rights or applicable law. Ordinary search-engine indexing of pages intentionally made public is not prohibited by this paragraph.
Third-party, advertising, and affiliate services
The service may include advertising, sponsored or partner content, affiliate or referral links, and links to maps, transport companies, attractions, booking providers, payment services, identity providers, and other independent third parties. Their availability, prices, terms, security, and privacy practices are their responsibility. Unmapped Japan may receive compensation or a commission from qualifying interactions, purchases, or bookings as described in the Affiliate Disclosure. Use of the service does not waive privacy choices or rights that applicable law separately requires.
Privacy
The Privacy Policy describes information collected and processed in connection with accounts, Anonymous Traveler profiles, saved preferences, browser sessions, approximate city/region display, security events, password recovery, service providers, cookies, and other site operations. Your use of the service is subject to that posted policy and any choices or rights available to you under applicable law.
Availability, disclaimers, and liability
The service is provided on an as-available basis. We do not promise uninterrupted availability, permanent preservation of temporary Anonymous Traveler data, or that third-party, map, schedule, price, location, security, or travel information will always be complete or error-free. To the extent permitted by applicable law, Unmapped Japan is not responsible for indirect or consequential losses caused by changing travel conditions, third-party services, closures, schedule changes, lost temporary preferences, unauthorized use of credentials or a shared Code/PIN, or decisions made solely from editorial or planning information. Nothing in these Terms excludes or limits rights or liabilities that cannot legally be excluded or limited.
Enforcement and account actions
We may remove content, revoke sessions, restrict functionality, suspend an account, or terminate access when reasonably necessary to enforce these Terms, protect users or the service, respond to security concerns, comply with law, or address fraud or abuse. To help prevent evasion of a ban or repeated abuse, we may use privacy-minimized cryptographic representations of registration and eligible network identifiers for access-control purposes. Where appropriate, we may preserve records needed for security, dispute resolution, legal compliance, or legitimate audit purposes after access ends.
Changes
These Terms may be updated as the service changes. The current revision date will remain visible on this page. Continued use after an updated version is posted means the then-current Terms apply to later use, subject to any notice or consent requirements imposed by applicable law.
