Nomura-ke Samurai Residence - Nagamachi House & Garden

武家屋敷跡 野村家

Nomura-ke opens one samurai household within Kanazawa's Nagamachi district to closer inspection. Interior rooms, displayed objects and a compact garden bring the scale of domestic life into focus after walking the neighborhood's walled lanes. Look at how the rooms frame the garden as well as at individual details to understand the relationship between the house and its setting.

Why go

The residence adds an interior perspective to Nagamachi, showing a household's rooms and garden behind the district's boundary walls.

Field Notes

The Nomura family served the Maeda lords over successive generations, but the house visitors enter is not an unchanged residence handed down intact. Kanazawa’s official architectural guide explains that part of a shipping wholesaler’s home was relocated to this site. The place therefore brings together a samurai-family location and finely crafted domestic architecture with a separate building history.

That distinction makes the interiors more interesting to read carefully. Look at the cypress coffered ceiling, painted sliding panels and the way openings frame the compact garden. The water in the garden is drawn from the surrounding irrigation system, connecting this private setting to Nagamachi’s wider waterways. Appreciating the workmanship does not require treating every room as a direct record of the Nomura household: the residence also illustrates how valuable buildings and materials were reused in later preservation.
