Beppu Tower - visitor guide

別府タワー

Beppu Tower offers a view of the city and bay from a steel landmark of Japan's postwar tourism era. Opened in 1957 and designed by Tachū Naitō, it belongs to the same tower-building tradition as several better-known urban observatories. Its waterfront setting puts Beppu's coastal geography at the center of the visit.

Why go

Use the observation levels to orient yourself between the coast and the city before exploring at street level. The historical tower and the view are complementary attractions: one explains the building's place in postwar leisure, while the other reveals Beppu's setting. Visibility depends on conditions, so a clear outlook should be treated as a possibility rather than a promise.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 45–60 minutes. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: Late afternoon through evening for city and bay views.

Access reference: Beppu Station. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

Observation floors 16–17 open 09:30–21:30, last entry 21:00. Standard adult observation-deck admission is ¥800. The optional Beppu Art Museum combination ticket is ¥1,000; visit that museum first because its last entry is 16:30. The official visitor page links online ticket vendors; admission tickets can also be bought at the first-floor vending machine.
