Why go
Treat the market as a collection of independent sellers and kitchens. Ask a participating stall how the ingredient preparation service works before buying, including the cooking charge and which restaurant will handle the food. Shop hours and closing days vary, so check the market noticeboard if a specific meal or seller is your main reason for coming.
Field Notes
The market began with informal trading near the Kainan bus stop after the war. Naha City brought those activities into a municipal market in 1950, initially with meat and fish sections. It acquired the name First Makishi when a second market opened in 1969, and a replacement building was completed in 1972, the year Okinawa returned to Japanese administration. These changes connect a food-shopping visit with the rebuilding of ordinary life in postwar Naha.
The present structure is another chapter in that process. Sellers moved to temporary premises in 2019 while rebuilding took place, returning to a new market on the original site in March 2023. Even the ingredient-to-kitchen service has a documented history: introduced in 1990, it drew on dining practices elsewhere in Asia. The new building therefore houses an evolving local institution whose trading relationships and food culture are older than its walls.
Planning Notes
Suggested time on site: 60–90 minutes. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

For October 3–December 27, 2026 (Japan time), the current operator guide publishes building hours of 08:00–22:00, with individual shop hours varying. Applying its fourth-Sunday closure rule gives October 25 and November 22 as closed; December is expressly exempt, including December 27. The guide also lists January 1–3, lunar New Year and post-lunar-Bon closures, which fall outside this autumn horizon. These are published regular hours, not a guarantee of future operation or every tenant being open. The guide separately gives 19:45 as the cooking last order for eligible first-floor meat/fish ingredients (limited products), and 20:00 for second-floor restaurants. Neither is a building-entry cutoff; no common last-entry time was established. The August 5, 2026 typhoon policy says the market closes one hour before route buses suspend service. If buses have been suspended since first service and remain suspended at noon, the market closes all day; if service resumes by noon, it opens when preparations are ready, while second-floor restaurants remain closed that day. Check the current market notice before traveling during a typhoon. These building rules do not establish access to the former temporary market, surrounding streets or individual sellers.
