Why go
A useful route for linking Naha shopping and food stops rather than visiting one isolated attraction.
Field Notes
Kokusai-dori’s name preserves an unexpected part of Naha’s postwar history. The International Street was named after the Ernie Pyle International Theater, a cinema serving the American servicemen stationed in Okinawa after the war. JNTO describes the prewar road as a modest track amid fields, a striking contrast with the commercial avenue that developed here. Its present identity is therefore tied to a modern transformation of the city rather than the survival of a traditional main street.
That contrast is worth keeping in mind as you move between the main avenue and the smaller shopping arcades. The busy frontage gives a broad introduction to Okinawan goods and entertainment, while the side streets make the scale of individual traders easier to see. Looking at both produces a fuller impression of the commercial neighbourhood than following the main road alone.

The map is intentionally limited; confirm permitted access through the official source.
The association schedules the pedestrian-priority Transit Mall on Sundays from 12:00 to 18:00, cancelled in rain, along the approximately 1.3 km section between the Prefectural Office North Exit intersection (Palette Kumoji) and Saionbashi intersection (Makishi Station). Check the association’s latest notices for cancellations. This is a street-use interval, not a common opening schedule for individual shops.
