Inuyama Castle - visitor guide

犬山城

Inuyama Castle's surviving wooden keep stands above the Kiso River, giving the visit a focus on original structure as well as the setting. Inside, steep stairs and low beams make the physical experience part of the attraction. Consider those interior conditions when deciding whether to explore the keep or concentrate on the surroundings.

Why go

The preserved keep suits travelers who want to experience historic castle construction directly.

Field Notes

The keep’s survival involved several decisions to repair and retain it. In 1871, after the castle passed to Aichi Prefecture, most of the other buildings were demolished. Some gates were moved to temples elsewhere in the region. The keep then suffered major damage in the 1891 Mino-Owari earthquake. It was returned to the former ruling Naruse family in 1895 on condition that it be restored, with donations from the family and local townspeople supporting the work.

Further repairs followed typhoon damage, including a major dismantling and restoration campaign from 1961 to 1965. That investigation revealed alterations behind the building’s present appearance, so the keep should be understood as historic fabric maintained and adapted over time. Ownership transferred to a foundation in 2004 after its unusually long period in private hands. These episodes add meaning to the timber interior: what survives is evidence of local preservation as well as military architecture. They also explain why the keep remains while much of the original castle complex must be imagined.
