Field Notes
The first-floor Toyoda Model AA is a useful introduction to how this museum tells history. It represents Toyota’s first commercially produced passenger car of 1936, but the object on display is a replica made from original drawings for the museum’s 1989 opening. The early Benz Patent Motorwagen in the chronological galleries is also identified as a replica. Checking that distinction on labels helps separate an original survivor from a reconstruction made to explain a missing chapter. The second-floor route follows the development of practical gasoline cars through the 1950s; the third floor continues with the expansion and diversification of motoring. Taking the floors in sequence makes changes in scale, body shape and intended use easier to compare across manufacturers, rather than treating each car as an isolated collectible.
