Why go
A focused stop for listeners and collectors interested in how music is selected, displayed and sold in Japan.
Field Notes
The Shibuya shop began in Udagawacho in 1981, following Tower Records’ entry into Japan through imported-record wholesaling in 1979. It moved to the present Jinnan location in 1995 as a much larger music store. That history makes the building part of Shibuya’s long relationship with physical music retail, rather than simply an international shop name transplanted into Tokyo.
Its development also helps explain why browsing and events coexist here. A 2012 renewal added a café, exhibition space and the CUTUP STUDIO live venue, giving music several different settings within the same building. In 2021 the specialist TOWER VINYL operation moved from Shinjuku to Shibuya. The Japanese company had already become independent of its former American parent in 2002. For visitors, these changes offer useful context for the store’s continuing emphasis on physical recordings and direct encounters with artists: it has repeatedly adapted the record-shop experience instead of preserving one fixed format.
