Shōfuku-ji Temple (Nagasaki) - visitor guide

万寿山 聖福寺

Shōfuku-ji is an Ōbaku Zen temple in Nagasaki whose historic buildings and reused roof-tile wall reward close attention. The combination of religious architecture and carefully assembled tile surfaces gives the grounds a distinctive character within the city’s Chinese-influenced temple heritage.

Why go

The tile wall offers a small-scale detail to study alongside the temple’s larger architectural history. Major buildings are undergoing restoration, so current notices matter more than an older photograph when deciding what can be seen. Plan around the accessible grounds and avoid assuming that halls, interiors or every important structure are available to inspect.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 30–45 minutes. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: Morning.

Access reference: Sakuramachi tram stop - about 4 min walk; JR Nagasaki Station - about 10 min walk. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.
