Nyokodō (Dr. Takashi Nagai’s Hut) - visitor guide

如己堂

Nyokodō preserves the tiny hut where physician and atomic-bomb survivor Takashi Nagai spent his final years writing. Its two-tatami scale brings his postwar life into close focus, connecting a modest personal space with the themes of faith, neighbourly love and peace that shaped his work.

Why go

The hut offers an intimate point of reference beside the broader account presented by the adjacent Takashi Nagai Memorial Museum. Consider the two places together: one conveys the scale of his daily surroundings, while the museum develops the story of his life and writing. Approach the site as a place of remembrance and follow its viewing guidance.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 30–45 minutes. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: To include the adjacent Nagai Memorial Museum, visit 09:00–17:00, outside December 29–January 3; these are museum hours.

Access reference: Nyokodō bus stop - immediately adjacent; Ohashi tram stop - about 15 min walk. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

The adjacent Takashi Nagai Memorial Museum opens 09:00–17:00 and closes December 29–January 3; these hours do not establish hut access. Elementary, junior-high and high-school students enter the museum free. The museum announces a joint ticket with the Atomic Bomb Museum. Only one accessible-vehicle parking space is provided; ordinary visitors should use nearby paid parking.
