Jindai Botanical Gardens - visitor guide

神代植物公園

Jindai Botanical Gardens organizes roses, plum trees, greenhouse plants and other collections into a substantial garden visit in Chofu. The changing planting gives different parts of the grounds their moment through the year, while the greenhouse adds another climate and scale. Pair selected collections with the neighboring Jindaiji district if you want to combine plants and temple surroundings.

Why go

The combination of systematic plant collections and an adjoining temple district gives the trip several complementary interests.

Field Notes

Jindai began as a nursery supplying trees for Tokyo’s streets before becoming a botanical garden in 1961. Its living collections preserve older Japanese horticultural varieties as well as displaying seasonal flowers. Plant labels therefore offer more than names: comparing related cultivated forms is part of understanding the garden as a maintained collection, rather than simply an attractive park.

For a different perspective, the associated Center for Plant Diversity concentrates on wild plants and their habitats. Its learning garden represents Okutama, Musashino and the Izu Islands, while its conservation work includes protecting and propagating threatened Tokyo plants. The Musashino woodland and tall-grass areas also recall landscapes people managed for fuel, compost and thatching material. This is a useful extension for visitors interested in how everyday rural practices shaped vegetation. Treat the center as a distinct part of the visit and check its own access information when combining it with the main garden.
