Why go
The park offers a view of central Sendai's public life within walking reach of its civic and commercial districts.
Field Notes
Kotodai Park’s relationship with Sendai’s civic buildings is changing through a coordinated redevelopment. The city’s plan links the park with the replacement city hall, its lower floors and surrounding public squares. This helps explain why older photographs and route descriptions may not match the precise space available during your visit. Follow current pedestrian signs and event notices rather than relying on a saved plan of the former layout.
The park opened in 1955 and was substantially remodelled around the opening of the north–south subway line. Its public role has therefore evolved with the city’s transport and government infrastructure, not only with seasonal planting. During redevelopment, the most useful visitor plan is a flexible walk through the accessible parts of the civic district. Check the exact venue of a market or festival separately, since a familiar event name does not guarantee an unchanged location.
Planning Notes
Suggested time on site: 45–90 minutes. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.
Timing noted for this stop: For the produce market, visit the temporary plaza Oct 6 or 27, 2026, 09:30–15:00; stalls finish when sold out. Check redevelopment access.
Access reference: Kotodai-koen Station; exits open directly onto the park area. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.
The park is undergoing redevelopment in 2026. Current city events use the temporary plaza; check the event-specific venue and signed pedestrian routes. The Shun no Kaori produce market is scheduled October 6/27 and November 4/11, 09:30–15:00, ending on sellout or subject to cancellation. These event times do not define park-wide opening hours.
