Shin-Hotaka Ropeway - visitor guide

新穂高ロープウェイ

Shin-Hotaka Ropeway climbs from Okuhida toward the Northern Alps in two stages, with a double-deck gondola on the upper section. The journey changes the scale of the surrounding mountains before reaching the high viewpoint. Check both sections' operation and the weather before traveling, since cloud, wind and seasonal conditions can substantially change the experience.

Why go

The staged ascent offers a way to appreciate alpine scale from above the valley, with the upper gondola itself part of the attraction.

Field Notes

The observation terrace above Nishi-Hotakaguchi Station sits at 2,156 metres, placing the visitor among the Northern Alps without requiring a summit climb. The two-storey gondola is part of the attraction, while the rooftop view helps reveal the difference between the deep valleys below and the high ridges beyond. This is an elevated sightseeing destination in its own right; riding the ropeway does not commit you to continuing onto a mountain trail.

Plan the outing as a return journey with time at the top, not simply the duration of one ride. The operator publishes separate status information for the first and second ropeways, and weather or inspection work can interrupt service. Read both before travelling from Takayama or another distant base. Seasonal events and special evening departures are listed separately, so an image of a night-time program should not be interpreted as normal evening opening.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 2–3 hours. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: October for autumn color, preferably in clear weather. Both ropeways are scheduled closed November 24–27, 2026 for maintenance.

Access reference: Bus to Shin-Hotaka Ropeway from Takayama or Hirayu Onsen; no nearby rail station. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

Both ropeways are scheduled closed November 24–27, 2026 for maintenance. The official Takayama announcement also closes station shops and food facilities during the shutdown. Nohi Bus separately confirms the 2026 dates and suspends ropeway-package sales; its November dates remain marked planned. No mountain hiking closure is inferred.
