Give the herb beds and greenhouse spaces time as well as the panorama, and plan the return around the ropeway's current operation.
Kyoto's Maruyama Park opens behind Yasaka Shrine into ponds, hillside paths and planted gathering spaces. Its weeping cherry is a spring landmark, while the wider landscape links the Gion edge with other Higashiyama sites. Follow the park beyond the central tree to appreciate it as a strolling route shaped by the slope.
Osaka Museum of History connects gallery reconstructions with the Naniwa Palace landscape visible outside. Geibikei Gorge is experienced from the Satetsu River, where flat-bottomed boats pass between high limestone walls. Check the boat operator's current departures and river conditions before traveling, and take care to distinguish Geibikei from nearby Ichinoseki's differently named Genbikei Gorge.
Kobe's Kitano Ijinkan-gai follows hillside streets between Western-style residences associated with the city's foreign communities. Ponds, bridges and miniature landscape features create a sequence of views within central Tokyo. Follow the names and shapes of those features as you walk to see how the garden evokes places beyond its own boundaries.
Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art layers contemporary exhibition spaces onto its landmark 1933 building in Okazaki. The renewed entrance, courts and galleries make the architecture part of the experience alongside Kyoto-related art and temporary shows. Choose a program that interests you, then leave time to see how the old structure and newer additions meet.
Kyu-Furukawa Gardens moves from a Western-style house and formal rose terraces into a Japanese garden below. The slope makes the transition between the two landscapes physically clear, with different planting and viewpoints at each level. Explore both parts of the grounds, checking the residence's separate arrangements if you also want to see inside.
