Moerenuma Park - visitor guide

モエレ沼公園

Moerenuma Park treats a large former landfill on Sapporo's edge as a single sculptural landscape conceived by Isamu Noguchi. Geometric hills, broad open ground and a glass pyramid give the park a scale unlike a conventional ornamental garden. Choose a route between its major forms and allow for the distances, with seasonal facilities checked separately.

Why go

The park makes sculpture something to move through and around, using landforms and distance as much as individual objects.

Field Notes

Compare the park’s major forms from different distances. Play Mountain turns an ascent into part of the artwork, while the larger Mount Moere lets visitors look back over the arrangement of the grounds. The Glass Pyramid offers a different experience again: an interior filled with light, with a gallery introducing Noguchi and views connecting the building to the landscape. These are complementary ways to understand a park conceived as one sculpture.

The park’s open grounds and individual facilities do not follow one universal schedule. The pyramid, fountain and shallow water-play area have their own operating periods, and the western entrance closes during snowfall. Check the particular features you want to use rather than assuming that year-round park access means every element is available. In winter the landforms acquire a different role in the snow; in warmer months, choose a route that leaves time to appreciate the spaces between the principal structures.

Planning Notes

Suggested time on site: 3–5 hours. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: Through October 20, 2026, aim for the 13:15 fountain show: 40 minutes weekends/holidays, 15 minutes weekdays. Weather may cancel it.

Access reference: Kanjo-dori-higashi Station; continue by bus, or use a car/taxi. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

The operator estimates 1.5–2 hours for one park circuit; allow additional time for indoor facilities and shows. The 2026 Sea Fountain season ends October 20. In October the 13:15 show lasts 40 minutes on weekends/holidays and 15 minutes on weekdays; weather may stop operations. Selected Glass Pyramid toilets are under renovation through December 31, 2026 (planned); other excavation and athletics-ground works affect parts of the site. Follow marked routes; these works do not establish a park-wide closure.
