Why go
Plan the ropeway as part of your wider Hakone route and check the operating status before setting out. A through journey requires a change at Owakudani, and service can be affected by weather or maintenance. Build in time for the stops you want instead of assuming a continuous ride with guaranteed views throughout.
Field Notes
Think of this as a chain of journeys linking Sounzan, Owakudani, Ubako and Togendai. Travelling the whole line requires a change at Owakudani, which is also the natural point to decide how much time to spend in the volcanic landscape. The operator allows passengers to leave and rejoin the service on the way to the final destination covered by their ticket. This makes it possible to use the ropeway as transport within a larger Hakone itinerary rather than taking a simple out-and-back ride.
The station connections at Sounzan and Togendai link the ropeway with the cable car and sightseeing cruise respectively. Leave a margin for those transfers, queues and any stop at Owakudani instead of adding only the advertised ride times. Weather and scheduled inspections can stop the service. Check operating and local restriction notices before committing to a circuit, and keep an alternative route in mind if your onward transport depends on the ropeway.
Planning Notes
Suggested time on site: 1–2 hours one way with stops; longer with Owakudani. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.
Timing noted for this stop: Clear morning or early afternoon. Finish Owakudani sightseeing before 17:00; afterward it is transfer-only. Check wind and service notices.
Access reference: Sounzan Station via Hakone Tozan Cable Car; western terminus at Togendai on Lake Ashi. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.
The operator’s March 25, 2026 notice says Owakudani garden sightseeing is not permitted after 17:00; only transfers are allowed. This restriction is separate from the ropeway’s all-station operating window.
