Hirosaki Cherry Blossom Festival follows spring through the moats, bridges and tree-lined paths of Hirosaki Park. Different cherry varieties and stages of flowering change the scene across the former castle grounds, from branches in full bloom to petals gathering on the water.
Sendai Tanabata Matsuri turns the city’s shopping arcades into a canopy of large handmade decorations. Colourful streamers and intricate paper work create the main spectacle, inviting a walk from one shopping street to the next to compare the designs and the care behind them.
Akita Kanto Festival is defined by the sight of lantern-laden bamboo poles balanced above the street. Performers shift the swaying kanto between different balancing positions, turning strength and precision into a collective display whose glowing shapes evoke ripening rice against the evening sky.
Aomori Nebuta Festival fills central Aomori with illuminated sculptural floats, festival music and dancers. The large nebuta turn dramatic figures and stories into moving light, while the programme changes between the main evening parades and the final day’s daytime and waterfront events.
