Sendai Tanabata Matsuri - plan your visit 2027: Dates, Venue & Visitor Guide
仙台七夕まつり
Sendai Tanabata Matsuri turns the city’s shopping arcades into a canopy of large handmade decorations. Colourful streamers and intricate paper work create the main spectacle, inviting a walk from one shopping street to the next to compare the designs and the care behind them.

What to know before you go.
Sendai’s celebration follows an August calendar that keeps its connection with the older seasonal timing of Tanabata. The decorations themselves are the central attraction, so there is plenty to appreciate in daylight. Related performances and evening events have separate programmes; choose those deliberately rather than treating the festival as one continuous parade or illumination.
Event dates, access and crowd controls can change. Verify with the organizer before committing non-refundable travel.
