Gion Matsuri - plan your visit 2027: Dates, Venue & Visitor Guide
祇園祭
Gion Matsuri unfolds through July as Kyoto’s float neighbourhoods prepare elaborate yamahoko, host evening gatherings and send processions through the city. Yasaka Shrine’s religious observances connect these public celebrations, while the two principal float processions give visitors different moments around which to plan a visit.

What to know before you go.
The float districts are places to see textiles, woodwork and community preparation as well as the processions themselves. Yoiyama evenings and the morning parades offer contrasting experiences; neither represents the whole month of observances. Use the current neighbourhood map and programme to choose an area, since the busiest streets and viewing arrangements differ between the two cycles.
Event dates, access and crowd controls can change. Verify with the organizer before committing non-refundable travel.
