Why we recommend it
Use this guide to plan the first and last ground leg on Miyakojima: the terminal is easy to understand, but travelers still need to choose regular bus, taxi or rental car and respect the 07:00–21:00 building window.
Special Visit Instructions
Some places are easy to walk into. These are not. Follow the ticket, arrival, entry and venue-specific steps below before relying on this stop in a fixed itinerary.
Arrange the island ground transfer
Miyako Airport has no dedicated airport shuttle. The operator directs travelers to regular route buses; taxis and rental-car options are also available.
Orient by floor
1F is the arrivals/services level, 2F is the departures/shopping level with Wi‑Fi and charging, and 3F has the observation deck.
Respect the 07:00–21:00 terminal window
The terminal building is currently available from 07:00 to 21:00; individual shop and restaurant hours differ.
Allow for a 15–25 minute city transfer
The airport’s FAQ describes access from central Miyakojima as generally about 15–25 minutes, depending on the exact destination and transport.
Plan an off-airport Yamato handoff on Miyakojima
Okinawa Yamato lists its Miyakojima Sales Office (Shimozato) at 1318-1 Hirara Shimozato, open 08:00–20:00 daily. This is an off-airport sales office rather than an airport-terminal counter.
About this place
Miyako Airport’s official history begins with an airfield built by the former Japanese Navy in June 1943. Civil aircraft operations began in 1956, and the airport entered formal public service in March 1975. A terminal known locally as the Hanagasa Airport building was completed in 1979. The runway was extended to 2,000 metres and entered service at that length in July 1983. The present terminal district and terminal building opened in July 1997 after new taxiway, apron, road and parking work. The operator records further passenger-facility expansion in 2020, including a larger arrivals baggage lobby and a larger departure waiting room.
Those changes produced a compact terminal that is straightforward to navigate by floor rather than by separate terminal building. The current floor guide places the arrivals lobby, information desk, rental-car functions, ATM, coin lockers, taxi stand and bus stop on the first floor. The second floor contains the departure lobby, shops and restaurants, free Wi‑Fi and a charging area, while the third floor is the observation deck. This layout makes the airport easy to orient after baggage claim, but onward transport still requires a deliberate choice. Miyako Airport does not operate a dedicated airport shuttle.
The operator directs passengers to regular route buses, while taxis are available from the terminal and rental-car functions are also represented on the first floor. The airport’s FAQ describes the trip from the urban area to the airport as generally about fifteen to twenty-five minutes. Because there is no rail station, a flight arrival does not automatically connect into a fixed-timetable city rail network. A late arrival is therefore better planned around the actual bus, taxi or rental-car arrangement than around distance alone. The terminal building currently operates from 07:00 to 21:00.
The operator says shops and restaurants generally begin opening around 08:00, while individual business hours vary. An ATM is located in the arrivals lobby, and the floor guide also identifies coin lockers and the general information desk on the first floor. Current flight schedules include direct services to major mainland and Okinawan gateways, but the operator warns that schedules can change and airline status should be checked directly. For departure planning, the airport’s compact size should not be mistaken for permission to arrive at the last possible minute. The useful sequence is to arrive with the flight and ground-transport plan already matched, use the first-floor arrival services if needed, then move to the second-floor departure area for the outbound flight.
Yamato’s current Airport TA-Q-BIN airport list does not include Miyako Airport. Travelers who need Yamato service can instead use Okinawa Yamato’s off-airport Miyakojima sales office in Hirara Shimozato.

For October 3–December 27, 2026, use the operator’s published standard passenger-terminal window of 07:00–21:00. The FAQ gives an unqualified building-use window but does not expressly say daily or year-round. Shops, flight operations, airline procedures and ground transport remain separate. Central-lobby ceiling work is planned for September 2, 2026–February 28, 2027, with temporary columns restricting circulation on 1F and 2F; this notice does not announce a terminal closure or replacement hours. Staying in the terminal after closing is prohibited. No general terminal last-entry cutoff was established. Check current notices and airline status before travel; the schedule is not an observation of operation on each date.
