Hozugawa River Boat Ride - visitor guide

保津川下り

Hozugawa River Boat Ride descends the gorge from Kameoka to Arashiyama on a traditional sightseeing boat. The roughly two-hour course is a one-way journey.

Recommended Transport Public

Why we recommend it

The route starts in Kameoka and ends in Arashiyama, so plan onward travel from the downstream landing rather than returning to the embarkation point by boat. Boatmen guide the craft between rock walls and wooded banks, making the river itself the focus of the journey. The usual duration is around two hours, but river conditions and seasonal schedules can change operations. Consult the operator for departures and any suspension before committing to a tightly timed itinerary.

Planning notes

Suggested time on site: About 2 hours. Keep travel and waiting time separate from that estimate.

Timing noted for this stop: For autumn foliage and same-day tickets, arrive 08:00–08:30; crowds build after 09:30 and afternoon tickets may sell out.

Access reference: JR Kameoka Station about 8 minutes on foot; transfer available from Torokko Kameoka. Check the final walking or connecting leg when choosing your route.

For autumn-foliage same-day tickets, the operator recommends arriving 08:00–08:30, no later than about 09:00; crowds tend to increase after 09:30 and afternoon tickets may sell out. Online reservations are available until the previous day. Through December 13, 2026, weekdays have hourly departures 09:00–15:00; weekends/holidays depart as passenger loads gather. These are departure rules, not continuous admission hours. Allow extra time for check-in and any queue.
