Why we recommend it
Use this guide when UKB is part of a Kansai itinerary: terminal choice, Port Liner access, Terminal 2 bus exceptions and the airport-to-airport ferry connection can materially change the transfer plan.
Special Visit Instructions
Some places are easy to walk into. These are not. Follow the ticket, arrival, entry and venue-specific steps below before relying on this stop in a fixed itinerary.
Confirm Terminal 1 or Terminal 2
The airport’s current guidance labels Terminal 1 for domestic flights and Terminal 2 for international flights. Confirm the live flight terminal before travel.
Use the Port Liner for central Kobe
Kobe Airport states that the Port Liner reaches Sannomiya in about 18 minutes.
Check whether the bus serves Terminal 2
Several current regional bus routes are marked as having no Terminal 2 service. Verify the route and boarding terminal before a tight connection.
Allow for the Bay Shuttle pier transfer
The Kobe–Kansai Airport Bay Shuttle uses a separate pier, and a free shuttle bus connects Kobe Airport’s terminal area with the pier.
Use the Yamato counter in the correct Kobe terminal
Yamato’s current airport-counter list shows pickup and shipping on Terminal 1’s 2F and Terminal 2’s 1F. Confirm the flight terminal before sending luggage to the airport or heading to collect it.
About this place
Kobe Airport opened on February 16, 2006, on an artificial island south of central Kobe. Kobe City records that the airport initially operated from 07:00 to 22:00 with a daily movement limit of sixty flights. In April 2018, Kansai Airports Kobe began operating the airport, placing Kobe within the integrated management framework that also includes Kansai International and Osaka International airports. A 2019 Kansai three-airport agreement expanded Kobe’s operating window to 07:00–23:00 and raised the daily movement limit to eighty. A later 2022 agreement provided for international charter operations and further domestic capacity expansion from 2025. Terminal 2 opened on April 18, 2025, and international charter operations began as part of that expansion.
The airport’s current configuration no longer matches its original single-terminal domestic operation. The airport’s information-desk page currently labels Terminal 1 as domestic and Terminal 2 as international, while live flight information remains the safest source for the actual terminal on a specific service. Both terminal buildings are currently open from 06:00 to 24:00, which is broader than the airport’s published 07:00–23:00 aircraft operating window. Information desks in both terminals operate from 07:00 to 23:00 and provide facility, sightseeing and transport information. Free airport Wi‑Fi is available throughout both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2.
For central Kobe, the Port Liner is the most structured public-transport anchor. The airport states that the ride between Kobe Airport and Sannomiya takes about eighteen minutes. Sannomiya then provides onward connections across Kobe and into the wider Kansai rail network. Bus service broadens the airport’s reach to places including Shin-Kobe, Awaji Island, Tokushima, Osaka and other regional destinations. However, the airport’s current bus page marks several routes as not serving Terminal 2, so a traveler cannot assume that every airport bus stops at both terminals.
That terminal-specific exception is especially important for a tight connection or a traveler arriving on an international charter service. Kobe also has a distinct airport-to-airport transfer option by sea. The Kobe–Kansai Airport Bay Shuttle links Kobe with Kansai International Airport, and Kobe Airport provides a free shuttle bus between the terminal area and the ferry pier. Kobe City lists the Bay Shuttle journey to Kansai Airport at about thirty minutes, separate from the terminal-to-pier transfer and other connection time. This makes UKB useful in a multi-airport Kansai itinerary, but the ferry schedule and the onward KIX terminal should be checked before treating it as a guaranteed minimum-time connection.
The practical sequence is therefore to identify the flight terminal first, choose Port Liner, bus or Bay Shuttle for the actual destination, and only then plan terminal services around the remaining time. For luggage forwarding, Yamato’s current airport-counter list places pickup and shipping service on Terminal 1’s 2F and Terminal 2’s 1F, so the terminal choice also determines where baggage can be handed over or collected.
